Line Stopping Services

Line stopping is a cost effective way to maintain, modify and repair various types of piping systems without shutting them down by using a line stop. Some applications include replacement or repair of existing valves, damaged or obsolete mains, and creating a permanent or temporary bypass to an existing section of pipe or line while maintaining flow in the main.

Line Stopping is the last alternative before shutting down or draining a piping system. Rangeline provides our line stopping services from 2 inch – 84 inch pipe sizes. Line stops can be used on all types of pipe materials and products. Here are some examples of the types of pipes, products and applications line stopping can be used.

How Line Stopping Services Are Performed

Below is a video demonstrating how Rangeline Group’s line stop contractors and certified technicians resolve an emergency pipe break without causing any additional process disruptions. By isolating pipe breaks, Rangeline can by-pass the damage and prevent production downtime and product loss. Line stopping can even allow us to perform repairs and replacement services. Some of the pipelines that line stopping can be performed on include steel, copper, asbestos cement, ductile/cast iron, PVC, HDPE, concrete pressure pipes and more.

What To Expect During Line Stopping Services

Line stops are used to temporarily shut down a pipeline system to complete modifications or repairs.

Line stops allow a system to operate as usual without any interruption of service. Line stops can be performed on almost any kind of pipe with pressures or product under pressure.

The line stop operation consists of a special flanged line stop fitting, a temporary valve, and our actuator. The line stop fitting is installed and tested, the temporary valve is installed, and the hot tap is completed. After the hot tap, we install the line stop actuator and insert the line stopping head into the line. When the necessary work has been accomplished, the Line stop head is removed, and the completion plug is set.

The completion plug seals at the flange on the line stop fitting and allows us to remove our temporary gate valve. A blind flange is installed on top of the line stop fitting and the operation is complete.

The line stop fitting can be re-used in the future if needed.
